An exceptionally well presented USA Hardback book SIGNED by the magical Dr Seuss. This is the very scarce first issue Book Club edition from 1958 and published by Random Houe - Beginner Books. Full colour matt boards as issued. Hand signed directly onto the main title page "Hi ! Dr Seuss" and a funny squiggle below. Extremely scarce, even more so signed. A very early true signature. Some very light wear over the years but no internal defects at all. Full bright endpapers as issued. An overall excellent presentation. A serious collectors signature. Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as the beloved Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Ted credited his mother with both his ability and desire to create the rhymes for which he became so well known. The Cat in the Hat, perhaps the defining book of Ted's career, developed as part of a unique joint venture between Houghton Mifflin (Vanguard Press) and Random House. Houghton Mifflin asked Ted to write and illustrate a children's primer using only 225 "new-reader" vocabulary words. Because he was under contract to Random House, Random House obtained the trade publication rights, and Houghton Mifflin kept the school rights. With the release of The Cat in the Hat, Ted became the definitive children's book author and illustrator. The Cat in the Hat made a return appearance in the 1958 sequel, The Cat In The Hat Comes Back. On this occasion, he leaves Thing One and Thing Two at home, but does bring along Little Cat A, nested inside his hat. Little Cat A doffs his hat to reveal Little Cat B, who in turn reveals C, and so on down to the microscopic Little Cat Z, who turns out to be the key to the plot. The crisis involves a pink bathtub ring! The book ends in a burst of flamboyant versification, with the full list of little cats arranged into a metrically-perfect rhymed quatrain. It teaches the reader the alphabet. At the time of his death on September 24, 1991, Ted had written and illustrated 44 children's books. His books had been translated into more than 15 languages. Over 200 million copies had found their way into homes and hearts around the world. Besides the books, his works have provided the source for eleven children's television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture. Other major motion pictures are on the way. His honors included two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.
