JIMI HENDRIX OWNED & STAGE WORN SILK SCARF
This
original 1960s silk scarf was owned and worn on stage by the late rock
guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
The event
was “Christmas On Earth Continued”. Billed as an “All-Night Christmas Dream
Party” and held in the vast London Olympia Exhibition Hall on 22nd December
1967. The all day and night event featured some of the biggest names in music -
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd with the final live stage appearance of
Syd Barrett, Traffic, The Move, Soft Machine, Tomorrow and Eric Burdon &
The New Animals.
Backstage
Jimi Hendrix chatted and drank with original lead singer of Pink Floyd, Chris
Dennis, whom he gave this scarf.
This
scarf is now offered to the public accompanied by a hand signed letter
detailing the event direct from Pink Floyd original lead singer, Chris Dennis. Also accompanied by a 6x4 reprint photograph of Jimi Hendrix holding the scarf between his legs. This photograph is the only known backstage photograph in existence from the famous December 1967 concert. Though it is a grainy photograph it clearly shows the item (see below)

This
major event was professionally filmed, but with the exception of only three
Hendrix songs the footage is thought to be lost. The last major underground
event of the year, the pre-publicity was hopelessly inadequate and this, plus a
particularly severe winter freeze, resulted in a sparse attendance and
financial disaster for the organisers, despite a fabulous line-up of acts—Jimi
Hendrix Experience, Eric Burdon, Pink Floyd, The Move, Soft Machine, Tomorrow,
Graham Bond Organisation, Sam Gopal and Paper Blitz Tissue. The Who failed to
turn up! The projected film of the event fails to materialise owing to poor picture
quality of the footage, probably caused by the use of old, cheap film stock.
The only known surviving footage shows Hendrix having a blast on stage
performing The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, Wild Thing & Foxy Lady. It is a
tragedy more film does not exist as Hendrix is clearly completely into the
music and having a fantastic night.
The event
was an iconic but sad time for Pink Floyd fans. People close to the band
realised Syd was losing it but perhaps did not realise this was to be his final
appearance. The ongoing riff within the band had finally come to an end. Syd on
stage was totally spaced out and the night was far from Pink Floyd’s finest
hour.
David
Larcher filmed it for the promoters, Image Inc. It was early days and Hendrix was
overpriced for those times in the UK, and there wasn’t enough money to pay
everybody. The idea was that they’d sell the film to pay the cost of putting on
the show, because shows didn’t make any money. But old film stock was used,
which wasn’t very good, so most of the film was pretty useless.
Jimi
Hendrix is widely considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in musical
history, and one of the most influential musicians of his era across a range of
genres. After initial success in Europe with his group The Jimi Hendrix
Experience, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967
performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic
1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. He often favored
raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the
previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback. Hendrix, as well
as his friend Eric Clapton, popularized use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream
rock which he often used to deliver an exaggerated pitch in his solos,
particularly with high bends, complex guitar playing, and use of legato. As a
record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as
an extension of his musical ideas. He was one of the first to experiment with
stereophonic phasing effects for rock recording. Hendrix won many of the most
prestigious rock music awards in his lifetime, and has been posthumously
awarded many more, including being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame, the UK Music Hall of Fame an English Heritage blue plaque was erected in
his name on his former residence at Brook Street, London, in September 1997. A
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (at 6627 Hollywood Blvd.) was dedicated in
1994. In 2006, his debut US album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the
United States National Recording Registry, and Rolling Stone named Hendrix the
top guitarist on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all-time in 2003.
