Mittenwald, Germany
This antique cello is the
personal and famous original stage used instrument, which belonged
to the late ELO musician, Mike Edwards.
The cello featured on many of
ELO's biggest hit recordings and was played on several of their critically
acclaimed albums.
Mike Edwards, used this
cello extensively during his time as part of the band ELO.
Mike played with this rare
instrument at the band's very first live gig in Croydon in 1971. He
played it at many venues around the world including the famous Reading
Festival, legendary Top Of The Pops appearances and several European Tours.
Mike was renowned for his
eccentric playing (often fingering the strings with an orange or grapefruit)
and wearing bizarre costumes.
He used this cello on the
following landmark ELO albums ELO II, On the Third Day, The
Night The Light Went On (In Long Beach) and Eldorado.
The cello is in excellent
condition for it's age and use. It is in full working order. Perhaps an ideal
restoration project in the future. It is complete with the original hard case
and bow,
Electric
Light Orchestra (ELO) were a British rock group, who released eleven studio
albums between 1971 and 1986 and another album in 2001. ELO were formed to
accommodate Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne's desire to create modern rock and pop
songs with classical overtones. After Wood's departure following the band's
debut record, Edwards signed up and helped create that final ELO iconic sound
we know and love today. Lynne wrote and arranged all of the group's original
compositions and produced every album.
Despite
early singles success in the UK the band were initially more successful in the
United States, billed as "The English guys with the big fiddles".
They soon gained a cult following despite lukewarm reviews back in their native
United Kingdom. By the mid-1970s, they had become one of the biggest selling
bands in music. From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated 27 Top 40 hit singles in
both the UK and the US. The group also scored 20 Top 20 U.K. hit singles, as
well as 19 Top 20 hit singles in the U.S. Billboard charts. The band also holds
the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits of any band in US
chart history without ever having a number one single. Also included with this rare antique ELO cello:
